Database Management

Database Administration is the creation, support, and maintenance of databases and their environments.  ITS provides design and development of databases, system monitoring to improve database performance, and capacity planning for future expansion requirements.

  • What are the features provided by this service?
    • Creates databases to support and meet requirements of business applications whether they are internally developed or vendor provided.
    • Implement security measures to safeguard the database.
    • Maintain databases by performing various tasks such as backup and restore activities, software patches and performance tuning.
    • Provide Reporting databases that mirror Production data to avoid contention using Database Replication or copies.
    • Migrate desktop/local databases to an ITS supported database while retaining needed business logic.
    • Monitor environments and resources to support peak database performance. 
    • Recommend improvement and report on application/database bottlenecks.
    • Provide support and training for database query tools.

  • What are the requirements/pre-requisites for this service?
    • Project must be approved.
    • Provide a list of individuals who should have database access and whether it is read only or write.
    • Estimation of the number of databases needed, their  size and yearly growth.
  • What is the turn around time for service delivery?
    • This is dependent upon the specific requirements and complexity of the request.
  • What are the responsibilities of customer?
    • Identify a primary point of contact to work with ITS in coordinating the activities being performed by the service and assist in creating the necessary documentation to facilitate the request.
  • When is this service available?
    • Available upon request.
  • What is the usual response time for this service?
    • Dependent upon ISLA with customer

  • What are the support hours for this service?
    • 7:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday.
    • For support outside of these hours, contact the ITS Service Desk at 901-222-2700 and leave a message. A Customer Support On-Call Technician will receive the message and call you back.
  • What is the cost for this service?
    • Database Administration is provided without cost to the department.  Some costs could be incurred for acquiring software licenses, procuring hardware, and 3rd party software.
  • Does this service require cost approval?
    • Depending on the amount, approvals could be required by either department administration or the IT Steering Committee.
  • What is the cost approval process?
    • If necessary, the cost approval will be part of the Service Request Process.
